Five Inspiring Garden Designers25 March 2021
Here at Artisans of Devizes we are not only passionate about what we do, but we are also passionate admirers of other people’s work too. We are always looking to see what architects, designers and landscapers are up to, and it’s wonderful to see so many ideas and inspiration coming through every single day with projects that utilise our stone and tile products as well as additional elements to create the ultimate exterior space. With this in mind, we wanted to share our five favourite garden designers and introduce you to what they do…
James Lee Landscape & Garden Design
Specialising in contemporary gardens and outdoor spaces, Brighton-based James Lee and his studio are experts in creating calming tranquil retreats in urban areas and we love their minimalist approach. They see gardens as an antidote to the hectic pace of modern life and so their designs reflect a feeling of relaxation the moment you step into them. A belief in simplicity and the purity of geometric forms are at the heart of their projects – subtle, comfortable and easy to enjoy as well as easy to maintain. Their work encompasses everything from small city courtyards to country estates, often collaborating with architects to create a seamless transition from indoors to out. A graduate of the renowned Inchbald School of Design, James heads up the practice and works with his team of fully qualified landscape architects and garden designers, who have a combined experience of over 30 years. We particularly like the way James and his team overcome challenges in terms of space or privacy, creating planting and screening to enhance an area while providing a cocooned feel that keeps out noise and prying eyes. Their choice of stone or tile for terraces, patios and landscaping are always on point too.
Tom Chapman Landscape Architecture
With a portfolio of grand country gardens and stunning public areas, Tom offers a complete landscape architectural service covering everything from site design and planning to detailed design, tender and site monitoring. With over 27 years’ experience, previous clients include English Heritage, working on historic sites such as Dover Castle, Eltham Palace and Osbourne House. His private residential portfolio includes some stunning countryside properties such as the formation of new formal gardens with lawns, topiary, fountains and swimming pool for a Georgian home in Sussex and new gardens for a medieval manor house in Berkshire. Tom also works on wider estates, restoring woodland walks and historic garden features. His work shows careful attention to detail, even on large-scale projects and commercial designs. The New American Garden at the American Museum in Bath is just one example of Tom’s expert organisation, which has resulted in a spectacularly colourful and curated collection of wildflowers and pathways for the public to enjoy.
Winner of three top category awards at the APL Awards this year, Surrey-based Landform Consultants create truly spectacular landscapes that invite you to sit back and relax and maybe pour yourself a drink while you’re there. Their work covers everything from design and maintenance to construction on special projects, commercial landscapes and private spaces. We love their careful planning and how they use stone and tiling to get the best, most practical use out of a space. One of their residential projects for instance includes dual level terraces with bespoke steps and a natural-stream water feature that runs through the length of the garden. Another scheme that really inspires us is a private garden that has been transformed into a space for outdoor entertaining and dining. Using the garden as an extension of the home, the space creates an instant oasis with bar area, firepit, sofas, seating and luscious shady planting, all set within a practical and contemporary-looking patio.
Ann-Marie Powell Gardens
Gold medal-winning garden designer Ann-Marie is also a TV presenter, journalist and author, who specialises in creating inspiring gardens for private clients, companies and charities. Her contemporary designs use innovative materials and a natural style on everything from Grade I and Grade II listed properties to roof terraces, hotels, spas and even show gardens at RHS Chelsea, where she won gold. Based on the West Sussex/Hampshire border, Ann-Marie and her team find their inspiration in the surrounding South Downs and its ever-changing landscape. We particularly enjoy seeing her urban garden designs that feature reclaimed stone and classic planting to produce a peaceful retreat inspired by rural French schemes. At the other end of the scale, her country gardens portfolio shows just how a hard landscape scheme can enhance any home.
Amanda Patton Landscape & Garden Design
Offering modern garden design in the Sussex and Surrey areas, Amanda uses her background in fine art and maths to design a beautiful, natural aesthetic with a very practical application so that each space works functionally and intuitively. Working with private clients, developers and architects, she also renovates historic gardens, designs small town gardens and works on one-off projects. We love how her work references its location and the architecture surrounding it to create a sense of place. Her style is very much naturalistic, using quality materials that complement each other beautifully.
