The Brief
This elegant home, set in rural surroundings, is a seamless blend of old and new. The original core of the home dates back to the 18th century, and the homeowners embarked on a renovation that involved restoring the building and extending it, with the newer elements made to appear older so that they melded with the original bones of the property.
Interior designer Zanna Westgate of Zanna Westgate Design was enlisted to create a beautiful and harmonious interior that showcased her signature style of timeless schemes with distinctive use of colour and pattern.
In keeping with the classic aesthetic, stone flooring was chosen for key areas because of its timeless appeal, as well as practicality.
The Project
Making an entrance was integral to the aesthetic as Zanna wanted the first impression to be a beautiful and elegant hallway that set the tone for the rest of the house. In a carefully curated scheme, bespoke wallpaper by Lewis & Wood sets the scene and provides a classic backdrop to the exquisite staircase, while a Jamb fireplace creates an impressive focal point. Our classic mellow Portland Limestone, quarried in Dorset, is a fine-textured, creamy-white stone with few markings, and was chosen for the floor. It was cut in an octagonal style with black contrasting nero slate cabochons, evoking a Georgian aesthetic. Each tile was carefully positioned, with a perimeter border providing the perfect finishing touch.
Leading off the hall is the open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. Our Provence-style Vieux Bourgogne Limestone was selected for this space to provide a cohesive feel while transitioning from the hallway and to help blend the old part of the house with the new. This rustic French limestone has an authentic aged finish that replicates a timeworn flooring. It was specially laid in a random pattern to evoke the appearance of reclaimed stone and it helps keep the look light in the statement space, which is defined by its airy feel and neutral colour palette. Vieux Bourgogne Limestone is continued into the boot room and the back-of-house spaces, and the steps down to the basement wine cellar were also clad in it for visual harmony. In the larder area, which is accessed from the kitchen, a touch of drama is provided by our Radcliffe Slate Herringbone, which delivers a striking contrast, as well as practicality.
Upstairs in the bathrooms, our Folio Marble provides elegance and opulence. This sleek, bone-coloured marble has subtle grey veins and highlights and is a perfect neutral flooring. The marble format was chosen to suit the shape and size of each bathroom and, as well as featuring on the floors, is showcased on the vanity tops, which were custom-made in our workshops and finished with a stepped Roman profile for a sophisticated touch.
