Laid-Back Luxury

9 November 2020

Set in the heart of the idyllic New Forest National Park in Hampshire, Lime Wood Hotel is laid-back luxury at its best. The ultimate country getaway, Lime Wood offers indulgent accommodation and the Herb House Spa, where you can enjoy a massage in one of the treatment rooms overlooking forest views.

Despite its period appearance, Lime Wood is a relatively newly built hotel which took five years in the making. With a team of designers and architects already on site, Artisans of Devizes were approached by award-winning interior architects David Collins Studio to provide luxury floor coverings around the estate.

Lime Wood is well known for choosing to offer ingredients sourced from local suppliers and home-grown goods, and that’s why Portland Limestone was the perfect choice for the main hotel building. Sourced in Portland, Dorset on the Jurassic coast, this organic and authentic limestone was the most local choice for floor coverings, hardy but with a classic and smooth finish, it was installed from the main entrance hall and throughout the circulation corridor.

Gordon Fleck, Senior Stone Consultant at Artisans of Devizes explains, “Our Portland Limestone was the best choice for this area of the house, not just because of its origins but also because of the clean, sharp look it creates. Artisans of Devizes sourced and installed the stone, which is not to be underestimated. Fitting a circulation corridor does not come without its challenges and we were delighted with the finished project and just how perfectly it matched up at the end.”

Following the installation of Portland Limestone, David Collins Studio approached Artisans again to provide a floor covering suitable for the spa area of the hotel.

Gordon continues, “Just 18 months after the successful installation of the Portland limestone, we were delighted to work with the team at David Collins Studio again on phase two. This time we were focusing on the changing rooms, showers, main pool, steam room, mud rooms and fitness pool.”

Due to the nature of the area, we needed a stone that would stand the test of time against the oils used in the spa. These oils can cause damage to natural stone, so it was essential we found the right one to avoid any costly staining.”

Lanyon limestone in a honed finish was the chosen stone for the majority of the spa areas, with granite used throughout the treatment rooms and areas particularly prone to staining, and the fitness pool finished in flame textured slate.

Gordon finishes, “It was a huge team effort, working day and night to ensure we got this project completed in good time ahead of a big calendar event for the hotel. The stone used certainly made an impact, and we often get client requests asking to recreate that Lime Wood feel and Lime Wood look in their own homes.”

“One highlight for me from our time at Lime Wood Hotel was the understated project of updating the flooring in the wine cellar. Artisans were able to take old salvaged stone from around the site, restore it at our warehouse in Devizes, and then install it in the wine cellar – a hugely responsible way of reusing old stone.”
