Glass & Mirror Installation and Care Guide

Glass and mirror tiles are only suitable for internal walls. However the mirror versions are not suitable for showers. Both types are not suitable for floors, worktops or over substrates that are subject to movement, (such as wood or fiberglass), or submerged conditions including swimming pools or fish tanks.

The tiles are subject to scratching and as such only finely sanded or un-sanded grouts should be used for fixing. Kerakoll grouts such as Fugabella Eco 0-5 Porcelana and Fugalite Bio are suitable. Try the grout on a loose tile first to ensure it does not scratch the surface.

    Surface preperation for wet conditions

In wet conditions, the substrate must be fully water proofed (tanked) prior to tiling. Products such as Kerakoll Nanodefense Eco and Aquastop 120 tape can be used.

    Adhesives and grouts

Use epoxy types such as Kerakoll Fugalite Bio or cement based, deformable, modified C2 S2 types, such as H40 Eco Rapid + Top Latex Eco or H40 Eco Marmorex + Top latex Eco. Fugalite Bio can be used as an adhesive and grout for glass mosaics.

We do not recommend the use of cement based adhesives mixed with water as this forms alkalis which may attack some of the glass tile backings.

For steam rooms only use epoxy adhesives and grouts.

Always allow a 2-3mm grout gap to accommodate for the thermal expansion difference between the glass tile and the substrate.

At wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-wall and floor-to-wall interfaces, leave a 6mm gap and fill with a low modulus neutral cure silicone. Colours matching the grout are available

    Heat sources

Always ensure that the tiles are a minimum of 3cm from any heat source, and if behind a hob do not let hot pans touch the tile surface. This is to avoid cracking. The glass tiles must not be installed butted up to one another.

    Cutting glass tiles

Cutting can be achieved using the scribe and snap method. Use a thin 18mm scoring wheel.

Cutting may also be done using a thin glass disc cutter (designed especially for glass tiles) coated with small industrial diamonds around the disc circumference, under wet water conditions. For L shaped cuts, drill a small hole at the 90 degrees turn to absorb stresses and avoid cracking. The glass cutting discs must be in good condition. Cut at a low rpm with minimum pressure on the glass tile.

Cutting around sockets will require extra care. Mark or trace the cut size on the back of the tile. It is advisable to drill a hole at the point where the intersecting lines meet, this will prevent stress transferring through the tile. Carefully cut out the shape using a small grinder with a glass cutting blade.

Drilling may be achieved using hollow tipped, water fed, diamond coated drill bits. Drill at a low rpm with minimum pressure.

If any difficulty cutting or drilling the glass tiles is experienced, the tiles may be cut at a water jet cutting facility.

    Cleaning

Use a neutral cleaner (‘pH 7), such as regular window cleaner spray, to keep the tiles clean. Do not use anything abrasive (cleaners or pads) on the tiles as they will scratch.
