When it comes to restoring a listed building, as a homeowner you want the help of someone who has plenty of experience in this area. For the owners of this Grade 2 Listed Georgian townhouse in Bath, it was a natural choice to enlist the services of Rachel Cropper Studio, which is based in the Cotswold market town of Tetbury. Rachel’s work involves managing the renovation and restoration of the interior architecture and design of private client projects and this four-bedroom, two-bathroom family home certainly kept her busy.
The brief for the bathrooms was for a functional and slightly masculine style for the en-suite, with the emphasis on the shower. The top floor bathroom on the other hand was to be suitable for bathing a young family, so it needed to be bright and playful while also acting as a guest suite for the spare bedrooms above.
“We specified Artisans of Devizes bookmatched Nero Portofino slab marble for the master en-suite shower walls,” explains Rachel, “as we thought this would create the impression of luxury given its size and we love the matt finish with subtle veining. We also chose Yoga Penny Mosaics for the double basin splashback, as these contrast fantastically with the London Basin Company basins, which have an artisanal feel.”
In the upstairs family bathroom, Rachel chose Darcy encaustic tiles for the floor with soft pink Carter ceramic tiles in Rose for the walls. “The tiles were the starting point of the design,” adds Rachel, “particularly in the en-suite, as we knew we wanted something really sumptuous so used this as a basis to create the monochrome theme throughout. Upstairs we started from the floor tiles with their pretty French-style design and worked this into the rest of the room, contrasting with the glass bars of the Balineum washstand, Arcade nickel brassware and the soft pink of the wall tiles. We then painted the existing bath in grey to offer some variation.”
The end result achieves what both the homeowner and designer Rachel wanted from the start, two bathrooms that are practical and functional with a luxurious feel in the en-suite and a fun, playful element in the family bathroom. A perfect contrast that simply works.
