When it comes to planning and designing a new interior, one of the most essential elements to consider are the surfaces, as it’s the walls and floors that can really make all the difference to the overall look and feel of a project. Far from being an afterthought, it is crucial to consider these building blocks of design right from the start of the planning process.
For the owners of this spacious seven-bedroom detached Victorian home in south-west London, the design brief was vast and precise. It included kitting out a brand new luxury bathroom as well as an open-plan family kitchen, pantry, utility room, an imposing hallway with spectacular sweeping staircase and all the bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, too.
Dividing their time between homes in England and Asia, the owners of this substantial property selected Meraki Design to oversee the project, a London-based interior design studio headed up by Eris Koutsoudakis and Maria Constantinou. Once work was underway, it soon became clear that Artisans of Devizes would be the perfect choice when it came to sourcing and supplying all the tiles and stone for the many walls and floors that would create the cornerstones of the new design.
In the main bathroom, which oozes luxury and opulence from every corner, the owners had a wish list that specified a built-in sauna, a double vanity cabinet and oversized period fittings. They also wanted the WC to have its own private space and for the general look and feel to encapsulate timeless quality with a nod to the property’s Victorian heritage.
Providing the perfect backdrop to the freestanding walk-in shower, cast iron slipper bath and bespoke double vanity unit, made to order Calacatta Manhattan Marble from Artisans of Devizes offers instant impact with its rich, milky white base that blends beautifully with the black, grey and brown marble veining. This bespoke stone can be purchased as extra large slabs, which can be cut to size for tiles, vanity tops, stair treads and other made to measure pieces. Natural and elegant, the stone is used for the flooring, the wall behind the glass shower enclosure and the skirting, cocooning the more functional elements of the scheme. The seamless finish also demonstrates how effective the bookmatching skills of Artisans of Devizes are and it’s a detail that really gives the room a feeling of perfection and five-star hotel chic.
To one side lies the sauna and WC while the L-shaped layout that remains offers plenty of space for showering and bathing. Full-height curtains at the bay window behind the bath help to soften the look, adding texture and warmth to what could otherwise feel like a cool environment.
Moving downstairs to the stunning open-plan kitchen, it’s clear that the design influences of Shaker style, industrial trends and even a touch of Nordic charm are at play. The large multi-functional space offers distinct zones for cooking, preparing food, dining and entertaining with a mix of materials and colour palettes to bring warmth and character to the room. Creating a cool, calming backdrop to the petrol blue cabinetry and vintage metallic accents is a combination of Artisans of Devizes’ Buscot Limestone in an etched finish, which is used for the flooring throughout, with white gloss brick tiles for feature walls and splashbacks. It’s this interplay of light and dark, warmth and coolness, old and new that gives the room a much-loved, lived-in look that will continue to charm for many years to come.
