An Urban Garden
For over 50 years, the Siddeley family has called this West London residence home. In 1974, the house underwent extensive redecorations, but it wasn't until September last year that renowned garden and landscape designer Randle Siddeley took possession. Initially, he found the house too large and considered not living there. However, as he delved into the potential of the property, inspiration struck.
One pivotal moment occurred in January 2024 as Randle gazed out of his bathroom window, contemplating the garden below. Realising this was a unique opportunity to cultivate a sizeable garden, he decided to transform the space. The existing flora—camellias, rhododendrons, a maple tree, and fatsia—formed the foundation. To enhance this, he introduced tree ferns and hydrangeas, aiming for a wild, natural aesthetic.
Randle emphasises the importance of natural stone in garden design, especially in open, sunny spaces. For this project, natural stone is essential to maintaining a seamless, eye-catching landscape that blends effortlessly with its surroundings. He highlights the versatility of stones like Wychwood and Buscot limestone, which are neutral and hard wearing, over manmade alternatives such as porcelain.
Central to this endeavor is the partnership with Artisans of Devizes. Randle credits Gordon Fleck, whom he met a decade ago, for playing a crucial role in the team's design process. Artisans of Devizes' expertise in bespoke stone ensures the perfect final product, aligning with the vision of a natural, yet striking garden.
