Forever Home

13 July 2021

For designer Laura Passey of Laura Passey Interiors, clients are always assured of a warm welcome. And that’s exactly what the owners of this stunning Surrey home got when they tasked Laura with transforming the 4,000 sq ft Victorian property into their forever home. Retiring to the UK after 20 years of living in America, Laura’s clients bought the house knowing it needed a thorough – yet carefully considered – remodel and refurbishment. This would be followed by full interior decorating and furnishing, using everything from bespoke furniture pieces to Artisans of Devizes’ Buscot Tumbled Limestone for the kitchen floor.

The brief for the new kitchen was to extend the space to the side of the house to create a larger kitchen area that could be more flexible in use. The owners wanted it to be of good quality and long lasting, well-appointed for cooking. This meant designing a specific area for pastry-making along with plenty of storage, a pantry and display space. The brief was also to respect the character and period features of the Victorian architecture and lay a farmhouse flagstone-type floor with underfloor heating beneath.

The style is cosy, homely, very English and a perfect blend of smart, traditional and farmhouse with all the mod cons. These include a comprehensive suite of appliances – fridge, freezer, AGA, combination convection oven, coffee machine, wine cooler, boiling/chilled filtered water tap, TV and music system.

“The overall style of the house was smart country casual, as this suited the retired clients,” explains Laura. “There were various themes taken up throughout the property. The one chosen for the kitchen was Victorian Housekeeper. From its Victorian past, the house had servants’ quarters with their own staircase and passageway to the kitchen. We remodelled this area but I wanted to include the historical influence. I chose Artisans’ Buscot tumbled limestone for its beautiful, natural look. It is timeless and says ‘hard wearing’.  The colour is warm, creating a beautiful backdrop. For the layout we went for a mixed width flagstone to create a relaxed feel.

“I had always admired the style presented by Artisans of Devizes. It seems to focus on natural beauty. They had recently opened their showroom at Chelsea Harbour, which my former colleagues at loop3 Interiors fitted out, so I was able to get to know them. They were very friendly and really took the time to help me understand the options.” The result is a spectacular kitchen space, perfect for entertaining or staying in cooking up a storm on its state-of-the-art appliances.
