We love stone with personality, and Portland Limestone certainly is not short of that. Portland Limestone has a story to tell dating back to a prehistoric era, you will want this classic stone at any dinner party.
Portland Stone is a limestone formation from the Tithonian stage of the Jurassic period, think Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus, like something straight out of a Steven Spielberg production. Quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, this is one of the most locally sourced stones in relation to the Artisans of Devizes headquarters in Devizes, Wiltshire. You can learn more about the geology behind Portland Stone here.
Stone has been quarried on Portland since Roman times and was first shipped to London in the 14th century. In more recent times, it is used in numerous building structures throughout the British Isles, and Portland Limestone can be found on many notable public buildings in London, including St Paul’s Cathedral and Buckingham Palace, really highlighting its versatility.
Our Portland Classic Limestone in Artisan Distressed™ Finish is a beautiful stone perfect for interior floors. Our proprietary Distressed™ finish exposes the surface of the grain and the slight variations in colour to enhance its intrinsic character.
Alternatively, if you are looking for a more elegant result, we recommend our Aged™ Finish, which highlights Portland Limestone’s clean, fine-texture, perfect for replicating the look of a stately home.
